How the Professionals Design Kitchens for Their Customers

When it comes to designing the perfect kitchen, a professional design team will take into account many factors from like and dislikes, to the size of the budget. But there is one thing that is clear – kitchens are a bespoke design.

In other words, what suits one person, won’t suit another. But you also need to bear in mind that how you use your kitchen will change over time too.

What do professional kitchen designers recommend?

# Lighting

Pay attention to how much natural light you have in the space and the location of any windows. Natural light needs to be supplemented with ambient light and these lights must be well placed too.

What most kitchens suffer from is poor lighting and lighting that causes you to work in shadow.

Countertops should be well lit so consider a range of lighting, including under-cupboard lights and pendant lighting hanging from the ceiling.

# Budget

If you have a small budget, you can still get a great kitchen but you need to be prepared to compromise and to also put your money into the important, functional aspects of your kitchen.

For example, work tops take a lot of use over the years and so investing in high quality work top materials is essential. Consider granite or polished concrete worktops look fantastic stained and polished to a high shine.

# Storage

Adequate storage in kitchens can also be lacking and so it is important that you get the best storage solutions for you.

This means understanding how you use the space. Some people enjoy cooking and baking, whereas other people are less likely to spend a lot of time in the kitchen.

This means the things you have to store will be different so choose the best storage layout and functions that you need.

Top Tip – don’t be swayed by gizmos and gadgets that promise fantastic storage solutions but give you very little in the way actual storage. Sometimes, the simplest solutions are the best.

# Neutral

A common mistake that people make is opting for a kitchen that is overly trendy or highly coloured with deep coloured cupboard doors and tiling. Bear in mind that to make changes in the kitchen can involve a lot of expense – replacing doors with neutral coloured ones will cost a fair bit, depending on the manufacturer.

Replacing tiling is a messy job too so consider carefully any colours you introduce into the kitchen.

And finally, why not get the professionals involved? We have designed hundreds of fantastic kitchens in homes across East Kilbride – why not yours?
